In Electroencephalography electrodes differ in type and need for recording (routine EEG, Long Term Monitoring, IONM monitoring, brain death assessment), they can be needle, cup, bridge, integrated into pre-wired, reusable and disposable headcaps.

The surface electrodes are placed, when required, with a conductive gel or paste after preparing the scalp with light abrasion to reduce contact impedance.
