Description

The µPattern electrode is an innovative medical device developed by the University of Genoa for the selective stimulation of nociceptive fibers. The electrode, patented (no. 1425199 / WO2015186087: “Selective Stimulation of small nerve fibers by micropatterned interdigitated surface electrodes”), is exclusively produced and sold by BIONEN.

The µPattern electrode is designed for use in neurophysiology laboratories for the diagnosis of nervous system disorders related to altered conduction along pain sensation pathways.

While electrodes typically used in neurophysiology are non-selective (they stimulate all underlying nerve fibers when an adequate current is applied), µPattern electrodes, thanks to their unique feature of micrometric distance between conductors, allow the transmission of electrical impulses activating only those present in the epidermis.

The stimulation activates only the intraepidermal nociceptive free nerve endings, while the field strength is not sufficient to activate the deeper Aβ fibers.

Stimulation with the electrode is completely selective, non-invasive, entirely safe, and easily tolerated.

Using this device, it is possible to provide a large number of stimuli, allowing the analysis of evoked responses related to small fibers in a way never used before.
